Alternative Fuel Stations Approach 10,000 in the U.S.

GasBuddy Blog -- A new report from the Energy Information Addministration (EIA) says that although gasoline remains, by far, the dominant transportation fuel, the use of alternative fuels currently in use is growing. But, the majority of that usage is by government and private fleets.

These fuels include: electricity, propane, higher ethanol-gasoline blends (E85), hydrogen and natural gas. Altogether there are now about 10,000 alternative fuel stations in the U.S. and about 160,000 gas stations nationwide.

The report notes, for instance, that bio-diesel fuels (which differ in the proportion of petroleum diesel and bio-based fuel) are used primarily in private and government fleets only, and of the 347 private access stations, nearly...

what a waste. Don't mind being given the choice, but some stupid politicians mandate these BTU deficient fuels.

I'm ok with E85 as a short term strategy. It lessens dependance on foreign oil and I'd rather give that money to the American Farmer if I have to give it to anyone. But, it's not a long term solution.

They are the only ones that can benefit at this time because of the limited supply and distribution of alternative fuels.

no alternative fuel stations in the area where I live & work - I'm guessing the nearest is about an hour away where the state capitol is located.

No OK603, horrible news--E85 is bad for your car's efficiency, bad for corn prices in the stores, and a boondoggle brought to you by a socialist administration, wanting more power and control over you and your pocketbook.

What we need is to ban all ethanol, not add more.

This buildout is following the same pattern as cellular did 20 years ago. Populated areas first then trickle down. It took almost twenty years to establish good seemless, yet still lacking in some areas, service accross the country.

This is a good push for E-85 technology as most of these 10k multi fuel stations offer it as their alternative. Here in Spartanburg lots of stations offer E-85. I haven't seen any offering hydrogen, propane or natural gas. Hey, if they put the same effort into implementing the Pickens natural gas plan to get trucks running on natural gas we wouldn't have a fuel problem.

Nothing near me yet. I will not start using an alternative until I can at least fuel up without driving an extra 50 mile to do so.

Lots of noise about how we should use CNG cars, but note that over 50% of those stations are private whereas 85% of the EV stations are public.

Propane stations? What vehicles run on propane? The only use I can think of is for your 20# grill tank.

Wide usage across America is years away due to availability of vehicles that can operate on multiple types of fuels. Governments (using taxpayers funds) and private companies (using their profits) are the only people able to afford this luxury.

Not surprised by all the variations but I can foresee that some types may become localized which will handicap travel outside of that area.

Hopefully, I'm wrong.
